BABA YAGA-

Classic Baba Yaga
BABA YAGA-
Baba Yaga: (Grandmother Bony Shanks) This Russian hag faery is said to be a wild

woman of dark magic and was said to live in a magical home which would move from place to place. In these stories of the Slavic folklore and myth they were said to come from the people who lived in the forests of northern Russian and Finland many many years ago. Yet in many way the people of today still believe of
the Baba Yaga even today. They had said to have stone statues named Yaga. And the Russian
soldiers who came to the area called the Golden Babas. It was said  that these statues had
their own little huts, built on tree stumps, full of gifts. These statues were of a local goddess that the
people would ask for advice in the old days of Russia. It seems that she also had the power to decide
what would happen to the people  too. a bit like Baba-Yaga.  The word Baba means a woman old
enough to marry . However in the Russian folklore of the Baba-Yaga it is often described as a frightening
wild, old witch with a terrible appetite for eating mostly children. It is said the story of the Baba Yaga
and the Vasilisa the Fair is one of the well-known tales and has things very in common with other folk tales
like that of Cinderella of the U.S folktale.
I found the Baba Yaga very interesting as for her origins. It is said in some of the folklore tales that
she stands for a person's fate. When ever someone enters her hut , they live or die depending on what
they say or do. Some also say that the Baba Yaga stand for an more darker side of wisdom  and others the
lighter side. From what I can see from the tale of the Baba Yaga she is really much more that just a evil witch with chicken feet that has an appetite for children... And I have seen many lighter side stories and children stories made hear in the U.S that my son loved as a young boy too..
In many ancient societies , the older women were seen as the keepers of wisdom and traditions for
the family or tribe. No longer able to have or care for children they became the mother to the rest of the
community. It was believed that these wise women understood the mysteries of birth and death. They were
the healers and looked after the dying. Sometimes they were even thought to have the power of life and death itself. The word witch once meant wise ... Well In my opinion it still does... as in the old days of the
witch hunts I think it was the 11th & 12th centuries those young and older women were wise beyond any ones years on the herbs of healing and are to his day...
It was the 12thcentury I believe that started the whole nasty thing of the bad witch with the magic power of which was thought be be used for only evil by small minded & closed minded people in those times which cause the fear and hate towards these wise women with their potions and wonderful advice.. As you know
the history hundreds if not thousands of women were put to death by fire just because of the picture of
the wise women became changed to the witch quote became the frighting evil casting wicked spells witch..
of course all of the women in the 11th and 12th century were beautiful women but were all depicted as the the frightening ugly old hag of the stories today ....
Now Baba Yaga is interesting to me because although she is described as a terrifying old witch, she is
still described as wise and very powerful in the tales and folklore of Russia and Finland ... and sometimes a
bit wild, cruel but sometimes kind.. Baba Yaga makes a link between the wise women of early myths and
the witch's of the folklore of sorts...
The Baba Yaga like most witches can fly but doesn't use a broomstick. She uses a giant mortar with her
knees almost touching her chin. She drives very fast over the forest and uses the pestle as a rudder held in
her right hand. Baba Yaga sweeps away her tacks with broom made out of silver Birch held in her left
hand. Whenever she appears, there is always a wild wind that begins to blow and the trees will groan as the
leave whirl through the air. You know that the Baba Yaga in in the forest.. Her home is a hut deep in the
birch forest, in a place that is very difficult to find, unless a magic thread or feather shows the way. The hut has a life of its own. It stands on large chicken legs and can move about. Its windows act as eyes and the lock is a full set of teeth. A post fence surround the hut. The posts are made of human bones and the topped
with skull whose blazing eyes sockets light up the forest. Very often the hut is guarded by hungry dogs...
The hut can spin around and moves through the forest. It can also make blood-curdling screeches.
Those who do find the Baba Yaga hut and find their why in, never leave as she washes them, feeds them
and sits them on a giant spatula before putting them in her oven....
Well I decided to do the post today I am on a roll you could say:o)
I also decided to put my post of the Baba Yaga on here too

Art from Finland

Art from Finland

for you all to have some good reading too.. Enjoy!
As I said I would do another post on the
Baba Yaga hag faery which will included images that will be
mostly from Russia being that, that's where
the Baba Yaga had origins is from..
Although I know there are parts of Finland too found (2 images)
All the rest are I believe russia ...
I have always had a special place for the Baba Yaga
Probably as I had said earlier in the post, having fond memories
with my son favorite animated movie of Bartok the Magnificent
where a funny tiny bat Bartok has to get the kidnapped child prince -
even if it means confronting the Evil Witch Baba Yaga!
Yes I found the movie! It was mostly all about this funny little bat facing his
fears dealing with the  'Witch Baba Yaga'
depicted on  20th Century Fox home Entertaintment  movie 1999
the memories are still fresh as the day when Kai was only
between 5 to 7 years old
~ENJOY~

Kirin - Japanese Unicorn

Kirin - Japanese Unicorn
The Kirin
Japanese Unicorn
When I found the Kirin I was quite surprised on how much it is compared to our mythical Unicorn that I just covered a couple of days ago... It seems that contrary to the either soft white, deep black
and sometimes in the myth of the unicorn Red too as most people will recognize in the western
Mythology or legends, the Asian countries have their own form of unicorn of sorts you could say. These
Creatures have many different names in the Asian culture: [Ch'i Lin, Qilin, Quilin, & K'i Lin and there are
many other spelling and variations due to continuous differing translation into the Latin-based languages.
Yet it seems that the Asian culture as come to one name that has simplified all the other translations and
had make it their own Asian Unicorn. They call it the Kirin, and focus on the Japanese interpretation of the
creature. The Kirin Unicorn has quite a number of descriptions because of its many list of names, even thought it is mostly called the Kirin Japanese Unicorn.. Some of these are: It seems that the
Kirin can be described has having a dragon's head that is attached to the body of a deer, which is covered in beautiful dragons scales, and a tail of an ox. And of course he has the famous large horn in the middle of it forehead... So to me the Kirin truly does sound like the Asian Unicorn... although in some ways I prefer this one more. Its probably because I love dragons and yu all
know that by just looking at my blog hhehhe... There are other variations that they speak of with the
Kirin Creature. These depictions are a bit more evil of sorts meaning that the Kirin is covered in fire that
can burn away evil people or even a chimera mixed with a fish's scales. The Kirin body is that of a Tiger with
horse's legs and has a dragon's head and neck. [Note it not so much that the Kirin may seem more evil looking, its what he does with is power against evil that is what is important].
Kirin as in the Japanese Emperors Kingdom
It seems too that with each new dynasty, Era or even country the Kirin will appear to be reborn to fit the
needs of the time that it is living in. Mostly frequently the Kirin was associated with the Japanese Emperors and the wise scholars of the times, so their depictions could alter in order to boast ferociousness or
otherworldly powers of those the Kirin would represent - like that of the Japanese Emperors...
The origins of the Kirins comes originally from China as many Japaneses things do.. where it was one of the
Four Divine Creatures that first arose into the world. Of the Four Divine Creatures the first arose into the
world they were the Kirin, Phoenix, Turtle and the Dragon.
Each of these Four divine creatures are associated with: a season - a element - a specific written character. In the myth, the Four Creatures Kirin, Phoenix, Turtle and the Dragon were created
by the first God before the world was made, and after the God had completed his task/ the Four
Magick creatures disappeared into the dark, mysterious places into the world that he he created.
The Dragon swam into the ocean depths, the Tortoise went to the marshy swamp land, the
Phoenix went into the sky and the Kirin disappeared into the depths of the forest...
Kirin Japanese Unicorn
After it was set upon the earth, the Kirin was said to have great magick powers that allowed him to
determine the purity of a person human. It was also known to be a peaceful creature that would bring
good luck and prosperity to those that ever would be so luck to encounter the rare creature.
Since it had this acute ability to determine if a human was wicked or had succumbed to vice, the pure and
kind hearted Kirin was seen as a symbol of justice that would punish those who strayed away from the path
of good and had strayed away to the path of evil you could say.. There are some myths that even speak of
a Kirins ability to breathe fire just like his divine brother the dragon. This fire breathing power that would only burn the evil people that it touched. It was also noted as being so peaceful and benevolent that it would
not even harm the blades of grass it stepped on, and so would walk silently over the valleys and fields of grass never even bending a single blade of grass.
Kirin Japanese Unicorn
These Divine Creatures were also very elusive creatures, that would only appear to people that would grow
to have amazing purpose and power. If an emperor were to see one, It would signify that he was ruling justly
and fairly. It was also said that the most righteous rulers would often see the Kirin grazing in their palace meadows. The Kirin did not just show itself to those of royalty it would also appeared on the day
Confucius was born and presented his parents with a message telling them their son would grow to be
a 'man of extraordinary good moral and talent.'
It is said that the earliest appearace of an Kirin was in the 5th century BC. Some have said it was even earlier as early as 122 BC.  I have noticed that some have the horn and others don't it just depends.. The Kirin are also said to be a symbo of fertility and often will bring children to a family...
I found this Magick Creature to be quite wonderful and
I hope that they are still roaming happily on our Earth even today doing the good that they do.. Wonderful and amazing creature the Kirin.. I hope that you all Enjoyed the Kirin Japanese /China Creature as much as I did.. I hope to find more fun interesting magical creatures like that of the Kirin..
